An optical low pass filter consisting of a liquid crystal substrate furnished with a liquid crystal layer. The optical low pass filter is provided with a first liquid crystal area where the liquid crystal is aligned along a first direction and a second liquid crystal area where the liquid crystal is aligned along a second direction differing from the first direction. The first liquid crystal area and second liquid crystal area are disposed in alternately repeated fashion in the liquid crystal substrate.
