A method for searching a broadcast channel in a broadcast signal receiver is provided to effectively reduce a channel search time in a broadcast channel search mode when all the broadcasts are sky wave broadcasts. When a user requests execution of a broadcast channel search mode in a view mode(202,204), a control block searches channels from 1 to 13 and temporarily stores channels having a valid broadcast signal as valid broadcast channels in an internal memory(206). The control block performs tuning on channels from 14 to 69 to search valid channels, and stores searched valid channel information in the internal memory(208). The control block checks over whether a current broadcast mode is a sky wave broadcast mode or a cable broadcast mode(210). If the control block determines that the current broadcast mode is the sky wave broadcast mode, it stores the valid channel information obtained by searching from the channels 1 to 69 as valid channels of the sky wave broadcast in a memory block(212). If the current mode is the cable broadcast mode, the control block converts the valid broadcast channels obtained by searching from the channels 14 to 69 into corresponding channels 65 to 121 of the cable broadcast channels and stores them together with the valid channel information from channels 1 to 13(214). The control block sequentially tunes the other remaining cable broadcast channels(from 14 to 64 and from 122 to 125) to search valid broadcast channels(216), and stores the valid channel information of the cable broadcast in the memory block(218).
