<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failures of a regenerative energy consumption circuit without providing an exclusive circuit in a power supply device provided with the regenerative energy consumption circuit. <P>SOLUTION: A DC/DC converter 1 generates a prescribed DC voltage so as to supply it to a load 3. A current value obtained by a current detection circuit 12 is utilized for detecting the occurrence of an overcurrent or for controlling a switch circuit 11 during normal operation of the DC/DC converter 1. The regenerative energy consumption circuit 13 is composed of a regenerative resistor R and a switching element Qr. When diagnosing a state of the regenerative resistor R, output of the DC/DC converter 1 is substantially made into a non-load state so as to control the switching element Qr into an on-state.
