Liquid, e.g. diesel oil, pumped in at 1, flows upwards through an annular filter element 6 into a filtrate chamber 5 and out at 7. At one place the bowl 2 for incoming liquid communicates by a valveless by-pass 9, 8, 11 with the filtrate chamber 5. The by-pass includes a threshold 10: the threshold resistance in normal service is greater than the filter resistance. Preferably the part 11 is a chamber having at least 1.5 times, and preferably more than 3 times, the volume of the rising pipe 9. |
