PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the surface state of an intermediate transfer belt or the like and to exactly decide the necessity of exchange or maintenance thereof so as not to perform useless exchange or maintenance thereof. SOLUTION: In the method for detecting the surface state of an image carrier in the image forming apparatus, polarized light is radiated to the surface of the image carrier 23, and reflected light therefrom is received by a first photoelectric sensor 102 through a first polarizing plate 105 having an axis of polarization in a first direction, and received by a second photoelectric sensor 103 through a second polarizing plate 106 having an axis of polarization in a second direction different from the first direction. Then, arithmetic operation is performed based on both of an output signal S1 from the first photoelectric sensor and an output signal S2 from the second photoelectric sensor, and the surface state of the image carrier 23 is detected based on the result of the arithmetic operation.
