The present invention relates to a device for permitting certain movement of a gland (20) to be mounted in a machine, which comprises a rotating shaft (16) extending through a stationary part (10) of the machine, the gland (20) providing a flame path between the shaft (16) and the gland (20). The invention is characterised in that the device (42) comprises resilient dampening means (42) arranged between the gland and the stationary part, capable of permitting radial and axial movement of the gland during rotation of the shaft. The invention also relates to a gland designed and arranged to co-operate with the device.
