In a gas-and-liquid-contact apparatus comprising a packing 9 (Fig. 1), through which a gas stream (e.g. air) is passed by means such as a fan 15 end over which liquid is distributed by means such as a rotating header 11, the packing 9 comprises thin partition walls, at least certain of which are undulated to engage the other walls at spaced intervals (Fig. 2) and defining cells 19 open at each end so that liquid passed over the packing 9 can flow therethrough and maintain liquid films on the cell walls in contact with gas in counterflow, each cell 19 being cut an angle (Fig. 3) to form elongated openings, the respective ends of substantially all of which lie substantially in the same respective planes, so that bridging of the liquid in the cells 19 is broken. Preferably, the packing 9 is made of undulating walls 21 separated by substantially flat walls 20 (Fig. 2), which are substantially parallel, terminating at the upper end of the elongated openings in one form and at the lower end in another form. The cells 19 may be of such a size that liquid such as water can bridge the walls. A method of fabricating a packing 19 comprises the steps of corrugating a partition wall to the peaks of which an adhesive is applied, urging a substantially flat wall into contact with the said peaks, cutting an edge of the corrugated facing on a bias, applying an adhesive to the peaks in the exposed surface of the facing cutting the facing into suitable lengths, and stacking the so-cut facings so that the exposed peaks contact the flat wall of an adjacent facing. Pressure is then applied to the stacked corrugated facings. An impregnant is sprayed on the corrugated facing and cured. Air can enter through louvres 4 (Fig. 1), the liquid such as water being collected in a sump 5 and recirculated by a pump 13 to the rotating header 11. The level of the water is maintained by means of a ball valve 7.
