An apparatus and a method for controlling the video recording of a video display device are provided to offer a time shift alarm to a user before deletion of the time-shifted data if a predetermined time passes after the user performs a time shift function, thereby solving user's complain that the time-shifted data is deleted without user's consent. An apparatus for controlling the video recording of a video display device includes a key input unit(134), a control unit(136) and a video processing unit(126). The key input unit receives time shift and time shift alarming commands inputted by a user. The control unit controls a broadcasting signal inputted through a tuner(100) to be temporarily stored in a storage medium(114) if the time shift and time shift alarming command are inputted through the key input unit and controls data during an initial setting time of time-shifted data to be displayed on the predetermined region of a display unit(132), and outputs a corresponding control signal according as the user stores or deletes a storage or deletion command by referring to the displayed setting data. The video processing unit performs video signal processing so that the data stored in the tuner and the storage medium can be displayed on the display unit according to the control signal of the control unit.
