The invention relates to a Jacquard machine which is used in a web machine and which comprises plates (2) which are used to lift and lower warp threads (3) of the web machine, a plate drive device which is used to lift or lower the plates (2) and a plate selection device which selects certain plates (2) in order maintain the warp threads (3), which are connected to the relevant plates (2), in a lifted or lowered state. The plate drive device comprises, for each plate (2), a bistable element (1) which is connected to the corresponding plate. An external shaping voltage which acts in the axial and/or longitudinal direction on the element (1) adopts an alternating first stable position which corresponds to a lifted position of the plate (2), or a second stable position which corresponds to a lowered state of the plate (2). According to the invention, the bistable element (1) consists of a plurality of layers and is tensed on both sides by the end regions thereof (Ia, Ib) in a maintaining element (5a, 5b). The shaping of the element (1) is produced by joining both end regions (Ia, Ib).
