<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet thickness sensing device having a high resolution in the direction perpendicular to the transporting direction for the sheets of paper and capable of being mounted in a banknote handling device. <P>SOLUTION: The sheet thickness sensing device includes reference rollers 28 and 48 each having a rotary shaft in the direction perpendicular to the sheet transporting direction and confronting the surface of the sheet transported and for locating the reference position for sensing the thickness of the sheet transported, wherein one end consists of a sensing roller 11 confronting the rollers 28 and 48 with the sheet transporting surfaces interposed while the other end consists of a displacement sensing means for a lever, and the device senses the thickness of the sheet from the displacement of the lever while the sheet is passed through between the rollers 28 and 48, wherein the arrangement includes a first sensing part in which a plurality of thickness sensors 1-8 are arranged in the direction of the rotary shaft and a second sensing part in which a plurality of thickness sensors 41-47 are arranged in such a way as to complement the mutual spacing of the thickness sensors 1-8 of the first sensing part. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
