An apparatus and a method for controlling audio volume in a digital device are provided to increase an audio volume value if an audio volume up key is inputted in a state when an audio volume value is a preset reference value, and generate and transmit a control signal, for audio volume up of an external connection device, to the external connection device through a wireless or wired interface, so that a user can more quickly control volume to desired audio volume level. An amplifier amplifies an audio signal outputted to an external connection device. A controller(15) variably controls audio volume by controlling the amplifier. If an audio volume up key is inputted in a state when an audio volume value is a preset reference value, the controller increases the audio volume value, generates and outputs a control signal for increasing the audio volume of the external connection device. Inherent identification information assigned to the external connection device and the audio volume up key value are included in the control signal.
