In a nuclear reactor fuel element, the fuel is in plate form and clad in aluminium. The plates are spaced apart and held vertically in an aluminium rack assembly which fits into a box of steel or zirconium. The box prevents distortion of the rack assembly due to lateral bonding and longitudinal creep and is welded to the reactor top plate. An orifice plate at the upper end of the assembly regulates the downward flow of coolant between the fuel plates. Coolant also flows between the plates and the box, the sides of which are perforated.
