An engine backlash preventing method of an HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is provided to prevent the delay of fuel injection generated due to malfunction of a backlash preventing logic and engine stall in restarting after idle stop by restrictively using the backlash preventing logic for the HEV. An engine backlash preventing method of an HEV comprises the steps of: sending idle stop flag information from the HEV to an ECU(Engine Control Unit); checking whether the CAN(Controller Area Network) communication state is normal or not; and disabling a backlash preventing logic by the ECU receiving idle stop flag through CAN communications. If the CAN communication state is abnormal, the ECU checks the temperature of engine coolant. And then, the ECU disables the backlash preventing logic if the temperature of engine coolant is lower than the pre-set idle stop coolant temperature and enables the backlash preventing logic if the temperature of engine coolant is higher than the pre-set idle stop coolant temperature.
