A luminescent element which comprises an anode, a cathode, and a luminescent substance interposed therebetween and which luminesces upon reception of electric energy, characterized by having at least one of the following compounds (a) to (d): a compound having 1,7-phenanthroline skeletons, a benzoquinoline derivative, a spiro- compound represented by the general formula (1), and a tetraphenylmethane derivative represented by the general formula (2).
