According to the invention, the speed regulation characteristic during stationary operation of an engine is changed by increasing the angular momentum at the compressor inlet in the direction of rotation of the compressor by means of a prerotating device such that the stationary operating point of the compressor nearly reaches the suction threshold of the compressor, thus allowing the boost pressure level to be regulated to the value required for the respective operating point of the engine. In the event of a sudden increase of the engine load, the boost pressure can be increased by resetting the prerotation grid, without having to accelerate the rotor in a time-consuming manner. The prerotating device thus simultaneously regulates the boost pressure and the engine load.
