Class 97(3) The fat content of milk is measured by filling, through funnel 16, a cell 5 formed between fixed and movable transparent walls 6, 7 and adjusting the separation of the walls 6, 7, by rotating within a boss 11 an eyepiece 2 carrying wall 7, until cross hair lines on a ground glass screen 3 illuminated by lamps 4 are just visible through the eye-piece 2. A scale on a bevelled portion 12 of boss 11 is read against an index on the eyepiece 2, and is calibrated directly in terms of fat content. When sufficient milk has been poured into the cell 5, milk enters a circular groove 21 which passes round the circumference of the cell and is discharged at 22 to indicate that the cell 5 is full. When the fat content has been measured the cell is emptied by opening a screwed plug 18. To clean the cell, two parts 8a, 8b may be pivoted apart to expose the wetted surfaces. |
