An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to sense the intensity of external light through an optical sensor and control the brightness of backlight according to surrounding brightness sensed by the optical sensor, thereby reducing power consumption. An LCD device comprises first and second substrates(100,200), a liquid crystal layer, an optical sensor, a protection layer(120), and a dummy electrode(440). The first and second substrates are defined as a display area(AA) for displaying an image and a non-display area(NA), the outline of the display area. The liquid crystal layer is interposed between the first and second substrates. The optical sensor is formed on the first substrate corresponding to the non-display area and senses the intensity of external light. The protection layer is formed in the front of the first substrate including the optical sensor. The dummy electrode is formed on the protection layer corresponding to the optical sensor.
