Sustained release formulations containing metformin or its salts are provided to delay release of metformin effectively, release it in a pH-independent pattern, reduce the total weight of formulations by using a relatively small amount of excipients, and improve tablet compressibility of formulations without further excipients. A process for manufacturing the Sustained release formulations containing metformin or its salts comprises the steps of: (a) mixing 100 parts by weight of metformin or its salt with 2-10 parts by weight of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose having 100-150,000 cps and preparing granules of the mixture by using 1-8 parts by weight of binder; (b) coating the granules with a coating solution containing 5-30 parts by weight of water-insoluble polymer; and (c) mixing the coated granules with 10-50 parts by weight of polyethylene oxide, and preparing tablets with the mixture, wherein the water-insoluble polymer is methacrylic acid copolymer, ethylcellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose phthalate, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate or their mixture.
