An apparatus and a method for driving a scanning backlight of an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device are provided to prevent ghost and blur phenomena by turning off a gate driver adjacent to a lamp in advance when the lamp is turned off. An apparatus for driving a scanning backlight of an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes a liquid crystal panel(52), plural gate drivers(52A,52B,52C), and an inverter(54). The liquid crystal panel represents images using liquid crystal cells. The gate drivers, which turn on sequentially the signals of gate lines of internal whole channels when the lamp of a corresponding backlight unit is turned on, are turned off when the lamp is turned off. The inverter drives the lamp and a control board for controlling the operation of the liquid crystal panel.
