An approach notification system using the GPS location information of mobile terminals and a method thereof are provided to uniformly and exactly set the range of an approach distance by comparing the GPS location of a user's mobile terminal with the GPS location of a target mobile terminal and transmitting an approach notification message when the GPS location of a target mobile terminal approaches the GPS location of the user's mobile terminal to less than an appointed distance. An approach notification system using the GPS location information of mobile terminals comprises a user mobile terminal(100), a target mobile terminal(130), an HLR(300), an approach notification server(400), and an SMSC(500). The user mobile terminal(100) periodically transmits GPS location information, calculated through its GPS receiver(110), to the HLR(300). The target mobile terminal(130) periodically transmits GPS location information, calculated through its GPS receiver(140), to the HLR(300). The HLR(300) receives GPS location information from the user mobile terminal(100) and the target mobile terminal(130), and stores it in a database. The approach notification server(400) receives the GPS location information of the two mobile terminals(100,130) through the HLR(300), and temporarily stores it in a location information DB(430). Reading target user information from a subscriber DB(410), the approach notification server(400) extracts the GPS location information of the user mobile terminal(100) and the GPS location information of the target mobile terminal(130) from the location information DB(430) and compares them mutually. In case the target mobile terminal(130) and the user mobile terminal(100) are located within an appointed distance, the approach notification server(400) creates an approach notification message and delivers it to the SMSC(500). The SMSC(500), receiving the approach notification message from the approach notification server(400), creates a short message containing the approach notification message and the location of the target mobile terminal(130) and sends it to the user mobile terminal(100).
