A method and an apparatus for providing/playing DRM(Digital Rights Management) contents are provided to insert contents play information into contents using a serial number of a contents playing application to prevent the contents from being illegally copied and distributed. A user terminal receives a contents file. When an instruction to play the contents file is inputted through the user terminal, the contents file is extracted and it is determined whether a serial number exists in a serial number region(S808). When the serial number does not exist in the serial number region, the serial number of a contents playing application is registered with the serial number region(S816), and then the contents file is played(S812). When the serial number exists in the serial number region, the contents file is played when the serial number of the serial number region corresponds to the serial number of the contents playing application(S810).
