An AMOLED(Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) device and a driving method thereof are provided to prevent the deterioration of driving transistors by applying black data to some areas of a display panel. An AMOLED(Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) device includes a display panel(100), an average brightness calculating unit(210), a look-up table(220), an insertion controller(230), a timing controller(240), and data and gate drivers(250,260). The average brightness calculating unit receives RGB data and calculates average brightness values. The look-up table provides address set values corresponding to the average brightness values. The insertion controller outputs black data based on the address set values. The timing controller determines output timing by receiving the black data and RGB data, and outputs control signals, which are used for applying the black data and RGB data to the display panel. The data driver receives the black data and RGB data, and outputs the black data and RGB data to the display panel based on the control signals. The gate driver outputs scan signals to the display panel based on the control signals.
