An apparatus for turning on a backlight selectively and a method for driving the same are provided to decrease the consumption of turn-on power for turning on the backlight even without giving a large change to image information displayed to the outside. A backlight(500) is divided into a plurality of regions corresponding to cells of an LCD panel(30) by a backlight cell designating unit(100). The backlight is turned on by a turn-on power supplied from a backlight drive voltage supplying unit(510). A backlight synchronizing unit(200) receives an image synchronization signal of an image displayed on the LCD panel to generate a synchronization signal of the backlight. A backlight cell determining unit(300) determines a specific cell of the backlight, which corresponds to a cell of an LCD panel of which an image signal is updated, according to the synchronization signal of the backlight. A selective switching unit(400) supplies the turn-on power to only the specific cell of the backlight, which is determined by the backlight determining unit, to turn on the specific cell of the backlight. |
