The method is for the regeneration of a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst which is connected to especially a diesel engine, wherein upon falling below a predetermined minimum reaction temperature in the nitrogen oxide storage catalyst, a low temperature lambda value is at least periodically predetermined and regulated by the engine control unit, this value being greater, and therefore less rich, than the substoichiometric target lambda value predetermined for the regeneration phase at reaction temperatures which are equal to or higher than the minimum reaction temperature.
