The object is to hydrolyze a polysaccharide efficiently to produce other polysaccharide and/or a monosaccharide efficiently. The hydrolysis of a polysaccharide is an important means for the production of a monosaccharide which can be used as a starting material for the production of ethanol, particularly for the solubilization of a water-insoluble polysaccharide or the production of a useful, water-soluble, low-polymeric saccharide or the like. The object is achieved by performing the hydrolysis of a polysaccharide by reacting the polysaccharide with water in the presence of a carbonaceous material having a sulfonate group to produce other polysaccharide and/or a monosaccharide.
