A device and a method for detecting and displaying a residual capacity of a battery are provided to inform a user of the remaining use time of the battery if a portable electronic device maintains the present operation state, by displaying the residual capacity of the battery on the basis of power ratio indicating that the batter is discharged, according to the operation state of the portable electronic device. A device for detecting and displaying a residual capacity of a battery(210) is composed of a battery characteristic value detecting unit(220) for detecting an electric characteristic value of the installed battery; a storing unit(230) for storing plural discharge curve data indicating the discharge characteristic of the battery; and a central processing unit(200) for calculating the residual capacity of the battery by comparing the battery characteristic value detected in the battery characteristic value detecting unit and at least one of plural discharge curve data.
