An article of footwear (22) comprises a chassis (10) having an upper side (31) and a lower side (26). At least one o?tsole component (24) is attached to the lower side (26) of the chassis (10), at least one midsole component (36) is attached to the upper side (31) of the chassis, and an upper (40) is attached to the chassis. At least one opening (56) extends through the chassis (10) from the upper side (31) to the lower side (26) which is unobstructed by the outsole (24) and midsole (36) components. The openings (56) allow for air circulation and water drainage. The chassis (10) is comprised of multiple sub-frames (13, 15, 17, 19, 21) that can be independently fastened to the other footwear components.
