An apparatus and a method for searching a map using screen segmentation are provided to split a navigation map screen of a portable navigation terminal into a plurality of sub-screens so as to search and designate a desired position efficiently. A navigation map screen is split into a plurality of sub-screens(S12), and one of the sub-screens, which corresponds to an input signal, is selected and magnified(S13). A position corresponding to inputted characters is searched in the magnified sub-screen and an identification mark is added to the magnified sub-screen(S14). The identification mark and information on the position are stored and a map image corresponding to the stored position information is selectively displayed(S16,S17).
