Internal combustion engine having at least one piston cylinder (1), havin g a housing (3) which encloses twin gas injectors (2) and has two inlet open ings (4) for the separate supply of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas into the com bustion chamber (5) of the piston cylinder, having two pressure-controlled a nd time-controlled, electrical inlet valves (6) and associated nozzle needle s (7) in the housing, wherein the combustion chamber has an outlet opening ( 15) for ejecting the combustion product and a thermolysis catalyst (20) form s the combustion-chamber covering, which thermolysis catalyst (20) has two h ollow cylinders (25, 26) which are spaced apart from one another, are arrang ed concentrically and enclose an intermediate space (27), wherein those wall s of the hollow cylinders which delimit the intermediate space are provided with a metal coating (28) for dissipating the combustion heat which loads th e inner hollow cylinder, and wherein the outer hollow cylinder is provided w ith an inlet opening (29) for the supply of water, an outlet opening (30) fo r the discharge of oxyhydrogen gas and a temperature sensor (31) for water-s upply control.
