An LCD and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to dispose column spacers on a flat portion of a black matrix, which has no step difference, thereby maintaining a uniform cell gap. A first substrate(100) and a second substrate(200) face each other. Gate lines and data lines are formed above the first substrate to define pixel regions. A black matrix layer(201) is formed above the second substrate correspondingly to the gate lines and the data lines. A color filter layer(202) covers at least the pixel regions. A plurality of column spacers(250) are formed on the black matrix layer while the column spacers do not overlap the color filter layer. A liquid crystal layer(270) is formed between the first substrate and the second substrate.
