Disclosed is a torque converter comprising the following parts: a torque converter clutch that is arranged so as to transmit torque from a torque converter housing to a turbine; a piston plate which is attached to a driving hub; a clutch disk that is fastened to a turbine hub, said turbine hub being functionally positioned so as to rotate at the speed of the transmission drive shaft; a pressure chamber which is enclosed by a cover and a clutch piston plate; and a flow chamber that is enclosed by the piston plate and the clutch disk. Also disclosed is a method for converting torque in a motor vehicle. Said method encompasses the following steps: a torque converter housing is driven by an engine; a liquid is transferred to a turbine within the torque converter; a transmission drive shaft is made to rotate by transferring the liquid to the turbine; the engine torque is transmitted by means of a mechanical bridging device; the flow of the liquid for the bridging device through a flow chamber is controlled; and the liquid is discharged from the flow chamber through a hole.
