A filter unit for liquids liable to freezing comprises a filter element (2), e.g. of fluted paper, which is enclosed at least by a surrounding elastic wall (8), and also has enclosing top and bottom webs (3,4) which may be either elastic or rigid. The enclosure (7,8) is integrally formed from an elastically deformable material, preferably thermoplastic elastomer, e.g. SANTOPRENE D (RTM), and may be protected by an external metal housing (3), preferably of aluminum, which in the unfrozen condition has annular clearance between its internal surface and the external surface of the enclosure (8). The annular space has a breather hole (17) to the external atmosphere. |
