A decorative rigid or flexible material is made by embossing a sheet of plain or tinted transparent thermoplastic material with a pattern of textile material, colouring the embossed surface, and laminating it to a transparent support sheet of the thermoplastic material or a laminate of a number of such sheets. The thermoplastic material may be cellulose acetate, propionate or butyrate, ethyl cellulose, or a polymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl butyral, methyl methacrylate or styrene. Embossing and colouring may be effected by hot-pressing the thermoplastic sheet to a linen or other woven fabric, removing the fabric, and applying a coloured solution, e.g. a cellulose acetate dope containing carbon black and a blue dye, by wiping with a squeegee or brushing, to fill the embossed recesses. After drying, a second coat of different colour may be applied to the raised portions of the sheet. Lamination may be effected with adhesive such as a cellulose acetate dope. The embossing may be done continuously as by a roller covered with textile fabric. |
