A plug 56 of alumina is fitted in one or each end of the heater tube 52. In a modified larger arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), a rod of alumina surrounded by a second tube of catalyst metal is provided axially of the tube 55, the graphite charge being contained in the annular space between the two catalyst tubes.
