A hinge device and an operation method of a portable terminal having the hinge device are provided to mitigate impact generated at a moment when housings of the terminal are folded or stop rotating by being opened at preset angle, thereby preventing damages on circuit devices. A hinge housing(201) is fixed to the second housing, and is equipped with a guide groove(211). A damping member(205) is rotatively received in the hinge housing to rotate on the housing, and comprises a frictional projection(253). The frictional projection rubs against an inner wall of the housing in the first section where the second housing is set in a direction far away from a position folded with the first housing. The projection moves as being received in the guide groove in the second section where the second housing is set in a direction far away from the first housing from a part of the first section. The projection rubs against the inner wall of the housing in the third section where the second housing is set to an interrupted position by rotating to be far away from the first housing from a part of the second section.
