863,237. Cyclic diene-vinyl ether copolymers. MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 17, 1959 [March 28. 1958], No. 9279/59. Class 2(6). Copolymerizing a cyclic diene hydrocarbon and an alkyl-vinyl-ether using a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, the proportions of monomers being sufficient for the copolymer to contain 30 to 90 mol. per cent diene and 70 to 10 mol. per cent alkyl vinyl ether, and mixing the copolymer with oxygen in the presence of an accelerator. Specified dienes are cyclopentadiene, methyl- and ethyl-cyclopentadienes and cyclohexadiene, while specified ethers are those having as alkyl groups methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, isobutyl, amyl, octyl, 2-ethyl-hexyl, lauryl, and stearyl and specified catalysts for bulk (preferred) or solution polymerisation are tin tetrachloride, aluminium trichloride, ferric chloride, boron trifluoride, titanium tetrachloride and silicontetrachloride. Specified accelerators are the oxides or fatty acid, resin acid or naphthermic acid salts of cobalt, manganese and lead. An oxygen-containing gas e.g. air may be used in the mixing. The products may be blended with such materials as talc, carbon black, cork, chlorinated paraffin, wood chips to produce linoleum-like sheeting. |
