A method and an apparatus for photographing a still picture while a moving picture is recorded are provided to photograph the object operation of an instant for which a user wishes when photographing the still picture while recording the moving picture. If recording is requested by a user(401), a control unit changes the image resolution of preview image data to the image resolution of predetermined moving picture data(403). The control unit adjusts the preview image data according to the changed image resolution, generates moving picture data, and compresses and stores the generated moving picture data(405). If photographing during recording is requested by the user(407), the control unit temporarily stops the recording of a moving picture and changes the image resolution of the preview image data to the image resolution of predetermined still picture data(411). The control unit adjusts the preview image data according to the changed image resolution, generates still picture data, and temporarily stores the generated still picture data(411). If the photographing during the recording is ended, the control unit releases the temporal stop and changes the image resolution of the preview image data to the image resolution of the moving picture data(413). The control unit adjusts the preview image data according to the changed image resolution, generates moving picture data, and compresses and stores the generated moving picture data(413). If the recording is ended by the user(409), the control unit compresses and stores the temporarily stored still picture data(415).
