864,144. Cellulose ether compositions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. May 21, 1959, No. 17368/59. Class 2(2). A water-dispersible, dry, granular adhesive material for use in applying wall-covering materials consists of (1) a water-soluble granular hydroxyalkyl alkyl cellulose having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the hydroxyalkyl group and 1 or 2 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, the cellulose ether having a particle size distribution of from 30-100 mesh (U.S. Standard Series), and (2) from 0À1-1% by weight of a water-dispersible wetting agent of the polyoxyethylene type dispersed on the surface of the particles of the cellulose ether. Preferably the cellulose ether has a particle size distribution of 40-80 mesh, a bulk density of at least 0À5, desirably at least 0À65 gms. per c.c., and a viscosity of 50-4,000 cps. in 2% aqueous solution at 20‹C. Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is preferred, but other ethers specified include hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose, hydroxybutyl methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl ethyl cellulose, and hydroxypropyl ethyl cellulose. The water-dispersible wetting agent is preferably a liquid, especially the polyoxyethylene monoether of sorbitan monolaurate, and is desirably present in from 0À25-0À5% by weight of the cellulose ether.
