A language learning service method in a portable terminal is provided to be capable of displaying data set by a user on a display of the portable terminal in standby mode of the portable terminal, in order that the user can easily learn languages. A standby screen is set in language learning mode by a user's request(205). When a display is turned on, setup information of the standby screen is confirmed(210,220). If the language learning mode is set on the standby screen, data in accordance with language learning is updated according to a type of a preset display mode by the user's key inputting action, so that the updated data is displayed, or the data is updated according to a preset period and the updated data is displayed(225-240).
