Webs of foam plastics, are covered on one or both surfaces with webs of other materials, e.g. polyvinyl chloride foil, textile or knitted fabric of wool, cotton, silk or rayon, which may be pile or gauze fabrics in a calender by first plastifying by heat the surface to be covered of the web of foam plastic and/or the applied layer if this consists of or contains a thermoplastic material, and then rolling them together under pressure between calender rolls maintained at a temperature below the plastifying temperature. The applied layer may be embossed or printed or both at the same time as it is united with the thermoplastic foam, by using suitably engraved rollers. An upholstery web may be covered in this way, the covering on one side being a textile fabric serving to secure the web to its support, the covering on the other side being decorative. |
