A water tank assembly for a steam cleaner and a method for controlling the steam cleaner are provided to prevent damage of a micro switch and preclude outflow of water in a water tank by installing a flexible sealing layer between a buoy member and a switch. A water tank assembly for a steam cleaner comprises a water tank(200), a buoy member(700), and a micro switch(600). The buoy member is installed in the water tank. The micro switch is connected to the buoy member. The micro switch consists of a switch manipulated by the buoy member, a first terminal connected to the power, a second terminal connected to an alarming unit for alarming water supply condition of the water tank, and a third terminal connected to a heater for heating water. The water tank has a through-hole, and a flexible sealing layer between the buoy member and the switch.
