A scan pulse generator for the rows GL1 -GLn of a large active matrix LCD panel is space-efficient because it uses non-display areas at both sides of the panel. The gate lines GL1 to GLn are sequentially charged by the pull-up devices Trpu to the left of the display area 200a and then discharged by the pull-down devices Trpd to the right of the display area 200a. Separate pull-down circuits may be active during alternate display frames (figure 9) to reduce stress on the pull-down devices. The gate lines may be shorted together during manufacture (figure 14) to allow a simple test to detect short circuits between the gate lines and the common electrodes. The connections between the gate lines are then scribed to allow the gate lines to be driven independently in use. |
