An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD device are provided to remove dummy stages by generating start and reset signals using a clock pulse supplied to shift registers. An apparatus for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes a display panel, a gate driver, a timing controller, and a start signal generator(SST). The display panel displays images. The gate driver drives gate lines of the display panel. The timing controller controls the gate driver using clock pulses having at least three different phases from one another. The start signal generator generates start pulses using at least two of the clock pulses and supplies the start pulses to the respective gate drivers.
