The device has a transparent support (2) comprising opaque zones that form optotypes or patterns e.g. letters. A unit (4) backlights the support. The opaque zones are formed of a photosensitive emulsion layer. The patterns are in black and white or form a gray shade. The support has a flexible band, whose ends are connected for forming a closed loop. The unit is constituted by a screen comprising a set of LCD type pixels. The band comprises a transparent portion such that the screen displays the patterns, which are visible to an eye of a patient, when the portion faces the screen.
