#CMT# #/CMT# Biomass with astaxanthine content is produced by pre-treating whey which is a by-product of cheese or curd making with a living or permeabilized lactose decomposing yeast culture comprising Kluyveromyces lactis; inoculating the pre-treated whey with an inoculating preparation containing yeast cells comprising Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous; keeping under conditions promoting propagation of yeast cells; optionally separating the yeast cells from the fermentation liquor; and optionally extracting astaxanthine from the cells. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# For the production of biomass from a by-product of cheese or curd making process. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The separated whey has a reduced organic material content which is then used for a sewage treatment process.
