APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR CLASSIFYING PACKET DATA

An apparatus and a method for classifying packet data are provided to increase the efficiency of communication by preventing a bottleneck state in an MAC(Media Access Control) layer by generating a service flow and classifying quickly IP(Internet Protocol) packet data received in an upper layer. A method for classifying packet data comprises the following steps of: generating a new service flow structure when a new service is generated in an upper layer(802); generating PCRs of the newly generated service flow; checking whether PCRs(Packet Classification Rules) of the newly generated service flow structure is included in the classifier range of an existing PCR list(806); comparing the priority of the new PCRs with the PCRs within the existing PCR list included in the classifier range if the PCRs of the newly generated service flow structure are included in the classifier range(808); and generating a new packet classification list by aligning the PCRs according to higher new priority than existing priority(812-814).
