PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: for example, an image compression technique MPEG2 adopted by BDAV is generally utilized for digital broadcast and is a widespread system, and can be used for various equipment, but since the MPEG2 records a data as it is, a data amount is large although it provides high definition, on the other hand, the image compression technique H.264 adopted by the BDMV has a high compression efficiency and can reduce a recording time and a load to capacitance, but is unfamiliar and compatible equipment is limited. SOLUTION: For example, a device records, reproduces, and converts divided AV data for taking more advantage of BDAV and BDMV. Concretely, a recording and reproducing device is provided with an additional function of performing image conversion and compression/expansion according to two or more formats, and is provided with a function of determining the kind of data, and is further provided with a controller which adaptively determines the kind of data for recording/conversion/reproduction/output, and also a user IF/controller for specifying them according to user's intention or taste.
