PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for effectively activating the latent resisting mechanism of plants against diseases and provide an agent and a method for controlling diseases, effective for controlling clubroot disease of plants of the family Brassicaceae such as cabbage and highly safe to the environment and human body. SOLUTION: At least one kind of microorganism selected from Sphingomonas TF1401 (FERM P-20899) and Sphingomonas TF1402 (FERM P-20900) is applied to a plant of the family Brassicaceae in combination with an oligomerized chitin obtained by the hydrolysis of chitin and having a number-average molecular weight of 3,000-50,000. The invention is preferably usable to plants of the family Brassicaceae such as cabbage, Chinese cabbage, turnip, Japanese radish, cauliflower, broccoli, Japanese horseradish, Santo-sai (Brassica campestris), Tai-sai (Brassica rapa var. chinensis), Komatsu-na (Suaeda ghuca), Nozawa-na (Brassica rapa var. hakabura), Karashina (Brassica juncea), Takana (Brassica juncea var.
