An optical record reproducing system receives reflection light reflected by data recorded in a recording medium, based on light emitted from a light source and applied on the recording medium, and reproduces the data recorded in the recording medium based on the received reflection light. The system is provided with a light quantity adjusting section for adjusting the quantity of light emitted from the light source to the recording medium by control from the external; a power maintaining unit for detecting the power of light emitted from the light source, and maintaining the power of light emitted from the light source substantially constant, based on the detected power; and a light quantity control unit for detecting the power of light applied on the recording medium and controlling the degree of light quantity adjustment by the light quantity adjusting section, based on the detected power.
