An apparatus and a method for controlling a lamp in a projection television are provided to heat a driver IC(Integrated Circuit) by using lamp heat at temperature lower than an operation temperature range, thereby stably operating the projection television even at the low temperature. An optical unit(150) generates a light source by using a lamp(151) and displays an image. A driver IC(Integrated Circuit) unit(140) outputs an image signal to the optical unit and controls driving of the lamp. A communication error detecting unit(170) detects a communication error of the driver IC unit. A central processing unit(130) sequentially drives the lamp and the driver IC unit if the error is detected by the communication error detecting unit.
